I stared at a "good month" and felt sick

Sep 06, 2026

I remember the exact chair I was sitting in.

Years ago, back when I was running my very first company, I pulled up the month's numbers and let myself smile. Revenue was up. Way up. The kind of month you screenshot. The kind you tell your partner about at dinner.

And then, a few days later, I couldn't make a payment I knew was coming.

I sat there staring at the screen thinking, how is this possible? The month was good. The top number said so. So why did my stomach drop every time I opened the bank account?

That was the night I learned something no one had ever spelled out for me. Your business isn't telling you one story. It's telling you three. And I'd only ever been listening to one of them.

Let me save you the sleepless night I had.

The first story is revenue.

It's what comes in the door, and it's the one we all celebrate. "Look what we brought in this month." I still celebrate it, and you should too.

But revenue is the opening scene. It is not the whole movie. I was reading the first page, closing the book, and calling it a happy ending. My business had other plans.

The second story is profit.

This is what you actually keep after the business is cared for. And this is the one that quietly tells you whether the whole thing is sustainable.

Whether you can keep doing this. Whether it gives back to you or just keeps asking. That "good month" of mine? A lot of that beautiful revenue was already spoken for. The headline was loud. The profit was quiet. And I'd only been listening to the loud one.

The third story is cash flow.

This is the one that got me that night. Cash flow is what's actually available when you need it.

Because sometimes the money is on its way. It's real, it's earned, it's coming. But it isn't here yet, and the payment I owed didn't care about "coming." Revenue said I was fine. Profit said I'd earned it. Cash flow was the only one telling me the truth about that particular Tuesday.

Here's what I understand now that I didn't in that chair:

Learning to read all three wasn't cold. It wasn't corporate. It was one of the kindest things I ever did for myself and for the people counting on me.

It wasn't pressure. It was peace.

Because the night I owed money I didn't have, that wasn't a money problem. I had money. It was a clarity problem. And clarity is a thing you can build.

Once I started reading all three stories together, the scramble stopped. The stomach drop stopped. I stopped guessing and started leading with my eyes open. Same business. Completely different way of carrying it.

That is the Energy Equation in plain terms. Every ounce of energy I spent bracing for a surprise was energy I wasn't spending on the work only I could do. Clarity handed it all back.

Your next move this week:

  • Pull three numbers onto one sheet: last month's revenue, your profit, and the cash actually in the account today.
  • Notice which one you already knew by heart and which one you had to go hunting for. That gap is where your surprises live.
  • Look at all three together and ask the real question: Does this business feel as good as it looks?

That question is the whole thing. Profit and presence, never a trade-off, and your numbers are where you find out whether that's true for you yet.

If any of this feels familiar, let's sit down together. That's what a Discovery Call is for. No shame, no scary spreadsheets. Just clarity we build side by side, so you never have to relive my night in that chair.

Lead with Energy. Live with Intention. 💛

P.S. I didn't need a finance degree to fix this. I needed ten honest minutes and the willingness to actually look. The calmest leaders I know aren't the ones with the most money. They're the ones who always know exactly where it stands.
