What six hours in my flower beds taught me about my business
Aug 09, 2026Friday, I got that feeling. You know the one. That pull that says get up, get out, go move your body. I've learned not to ignore it.
So yesterday I did. Five, maybe six hours in my yard. Cleaning up flower beds, pulling what didn't belong, making the whole space look like someone actually loves it. Which I do.
Here's what I didn't expect.
When I finished, sure, my body was tired. But two things happened that I want you to take note of:
- The accomplishment hit different. Not a screen. Not a to-do list I could argue with later. Something real, done, and beautiful right in front of me.
- The ideas would not stop coming. Business ideas. Solutions to things I'd been stuck on. Clarity I hadn't found sitting at my desk trying to force it.
That second one is the whole point of this newsletter.
Why movement makes you sharper
This isn't just a nice feeling. Your brain lights up differently when your body is moving. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and boosts the growth of new neural connections, which is a big part of why solutions show up mid-walk instead of mid-meeting. Researchers at Stanford found that walking increased creative output by an average of 60 percent compared to sitting. Sixty percent. From moving!
So when you're grinding at your desk, forcing the strategy, waiting for the breakthrough, and nothing comes, the answer often isn't more time in the chair.
It's getting up.
Here's why this matters for you as an owner
Your business needs your creativity more than it needs another hour of you forcing a solution to a problem. Creativity is how you:
- Solve the thing your competitors are still stuck on
- See the opportunity before it's obvious
- Show up in your business as the leader, not the machine
And creativity doesn't come from depletion. It comes from energy. That's the whole idea behind The Energy Equation. Your energy is a business asset. Protect it, and it pays you back in ideas, clarity, and momentum.
Your move this week
Don't overthink this one:
- Pick one block of movement. A walk, a yard project, a hike, whatever pulls you.
- Bring your phone - a way to capture ideas. They will come. Be ready. (I like to audio record my ideas when I'm walking)
- Notice what shows up. The clarity you've been chasing at your desk is often waiting for you the second you move.
You're not being lazy when you step away. You're doing some of your best strategic work. Trust the pull.
I felt it Friday. I honored it yesterday. And I came back with more than a clean yard.
